Quilt Fabrics: Designer, Batik, Patterns And Quilting

Quilts are vibrant, beautiful and an attractive yet functional decoration for any home. Quilt patterns offer incredible variety in style and color. Quilts can function as traditional blankets, decorations for beds and bedrooms, wall hangings and family heirlooms. The basic building blocks for any quilt are quilt fabrics. Batik fabric is one style of fabric used for quilts. Batik quilt fabrics have the unique mottled appearance of refined tie-dye. Multiple shades erratically patterned throughout the fabric are created by the natural variation in the intensity of the die. Designs are created on batik fabric by applying wax, glues or starches to the fabric before it is dyed. Dye will not take to the areas of the fabric covered with these substances.
Often more than one color is used on a single piece of fabric. In between dyes, the designs can be boiled off and new patterns or images applied so the fabric and designs become multicolored. Batik fabric designs can be simple, such as dotted lines or basic shapes of leaves and berries. Batik fabric designs can also be detailed butterfly wings, flowers, ferns or animals such as deer or birds. The colors of batik fabric are usually bright but some earthy tones are available.
Designer fabric offers many different types of styles and designs. Often a designer will offer the same fabric design in different colors, which can change the feel and appearance of the design drastically. Designers have different signature styles and motifs. Some designers use almost all abstract images or silhouettes while others use cartoon-like characters or are very realistic. Natural themes are popular in fabric designs, but some designers use flowers or flowers and birds almost exclusively.
Hoffman designer fabric offers groups of fabrics that use the same colors and similar themes, so it is easy to find several fabrics that go well together. For example, the Hoffman Winter Wonderland group of designer fabric has one fabric with red cardinals and poinsettias, green leaves and a beige background. Another fabric in the group uses the same shade of red for holly berries, the green for holly leaves, with a similar beige shade for the background. The third fabric in the group has stripes of the same red color alternating with beige stripes that contain a matching holly pattern.
